Burning Calories How It Affects You

CALORIES! The word we will almost certainly come across in any health magazine and article. It is the word we always see at the back of the packaging of every food item. We think we know it so well. Well.. do we? To some unsuspecting exercise fanatics.. the word 'calorie' is sometimes thought of as a bad thing. Is it really? What is a calorie then?

Simply said, a calorie is a unit of energy in food, and food consists of carbohydrates, protein, and fat, with some drinks containing alcohol. Carbohydrates have 4 calories per gram, Proteins 4 calories per gram, and Alcohol has 7 calories per gram. Fat has 9 calories per gram. Calories are simply the amount of 'stored energy', or a 'measure of fuel' in a food item. It is not something bad that we should avoid or something harmful to our body. In fact, we need calories to survive.

I'm not sure if you realise, but our body is burning calories all the time. Yes, even now, as you're sitting there staring at your computer at my article. When we consume MORE calories than our body requires - we put on weight, and when we consume LESS calories than what we need - we lose weight. Its as simple as that, and thats the logic behind what weightloss and weightgain is all about and how it words.

So by this, we can conclude that it would do our body good if we are able to cause it to burn more calories.. especially when we're on a weightloss plan. Well, what influences the number of calories we burn? It generally depends on our metabolism, body composition, and food intake. The more lean muscle mass and the lower amount of fat you possess, the more calories you will burn during physical activity.

What I love about muscle tissue is that the more muscle mass we have, the more calories we burn simply by sitting down, cooking, or even sleeping! Muscle tissue is very active--it burns a lot of calories. Every pound of muscle burns about 35 calories per day just on its own, without any exercise. A pound of fat however, burns nothing.

Sadly, when people diet, especially without the combination of exercise, though they still lose fat, they often also lose muscle mass. This is bad and will only be counterproductive in the long run, as this compounds the difficulties of losing weight and keeping it off!

Crash diets and severe calorie-restricted diets WILL reduce your metabolic rate too - another calorie-burning ally we don't want to lose. Exercising/weight training especially, during a diet, helps prevent this from happening.

Losing muscle is always a bad thing. You shouldnt strive just to burn as much calories as possible to lose weight and be a smaller version of yourself, but you should strive to build a more fitter, efficient and stronger body - which will cause you to naturally look good and be in excellent shape! In other words, we should strive for a physique transformation, and not a physique reduction. Carelessly overlooking the importance of calorie consumption will only bring more harm in the long run, and make it more difficult for you to keep your weight under control in the future. There.. now you know how calories affect you.

Bad Back Problem Solved

I am 2m tall (6.6? in imperial measurement) Therefore the World is not designed for one as tall as me. I have had back problems all of my life because I simply grew too fast and then found that every chair or seat provided for me by my school or my workplace, the bus , the train and then of course the dreaded aero plane was too small or had no legroom. I have a particular problem with trying to sit sideways to allow my knees the opportunity to bend normally. How many flights have I endured walking around and standing in the cabin suffering from an aching lower or upper back, observing the little guys swinging their legs in the air in long leg seats! How do they get those chairs? I have been at the head of the check in queue on many occasions just to reserve a good seat on an exit or front row, to no avail. ?Oh I?m sorry Sir, those seats are reserved already?. How do they do that? Then I find either a short guy or cabin crew has them!

Well if you are as tall as I am, you?re probably saying to yourself, ?Yep been there?

So what has all this to do with solving the back problems that many of us endure? Nothing really, I was just giving you an insight into how life affects me and taking the opportunity to have a moan at an airline or two. Back problems can affect all of us the long, the short and the wide. Obviously if you complain to your Doc about a pain in the back your Doctor will tell you to lose weight if you are a little heavy, and yes it will give you back pain if you ask your spine to carry extra weight for which it is probably not designed for. However as I said I have had trouble for the last 30 years so I am probably an expert on back pain!

Let me share a simple trick with you which you can practice whether you are infirm or a growing teenager on a daily basis for 4 minutes of your morning!

Five years ago I went to see a chiropractor in Stamford England called Soren and he was a wonderful Dane. (Please notice I did not say Great as it doesn?t quite have the same ring!) He cured me of the particular problem I had that month and then surprisingly let me into a secret. Maybe he didn?t realize what he was giving away as I have not been back to him or any other professional since!

I have passed this ?Secret? on to many people over the years, but most find it so simple that they don?t believe it can work for them. It does. The young especially are a fickle lot. I have to disagree with the song by Coldplay, ?When I was a young boy I tried to listen? because most of them don?t. Neither do the most of the older generation as they believe they are too old to take advantage of it or they know it all anyway. They do not. So I thought I would save it for my Grandchildren as they will have an aptitude to listen for a while.

Then yesterday I watched some sport on TV. It was a Rugby match in France. The kicker was about to take a shot at converting a goal kick. Well they can take a long time to concentrate on their work and the opposition players were just leaning on each other and generally waiting for what was an easy kick. One player however caught my eye as he was practicing my exercise! So someone else listened! Obviously he felt a twinge somewhere and he performed the one exercise that could unlock his temporary problem. There it was, he was leaning against the very post the kicker was aiming at and performing the ?Secret?. Please don?t get this wrong, you don?t need to be fit to do this exercise and you wont break into a sweat either, so this can be done anywhere at anytime by anyone.

So I thought why not post an article on the internet and tell the World. Well the trick is we are not naturally built to sit on chairs of any design. We stiffen up, at any point during the day we all stretch to try and straighten those back muscles and pop a few vertebrae back in line. That?s all fine but the problem wherever you have it, whether in the neck the shoulders the middle or the lower back all comes from the lower lumbar region and the hips.

You all have seen pictures of our Chinese friends, in their suits and ties, exercising before work in the morning in the squares of Hong Kong without causing a sweat. After this article gets published I expect to witness a new phenomenon especially in the squares of London and New York! Perhaps it?s just as well that white collar workers don?t wear hats any longer. So here we go. Stand still supporting yourself on a wall or another person, or something. Swing your other leg gently to and fro in a straight line as if kicking a ball but with a straight leg. There should be no effort it is supposed to be done gently. Just remember a straight line and as far as you can stretch without any pain for say 2 minutes. The leg should swing like a pendulum on a clock. Then change legs and do another 2 minutes on the other one. That?s it, that?s what the rugby player was doing and that is exactly what Soren taught me. I do this every morning and I have to admit I also do it in the swimming pool which is even better but you can do this whilst standing on the subway, on a train or waiting for a bus.

So come on let?s see the World exercising to Soren?s secret everyday and attempt to stop the majority of back pain forever.

Woops! I have just realized that if we do this all over the World many Chiropractors and Osteo practitioners may lose a lot of business, but save the rest of the World a lot more time in which to enjoy themselves.

Breast Enhancer Pills

Breast enhancement pills are one among the many non-surgical methods used for increasing the size of the breast. The efficacy of breast enhancement pills or any herbal products and supplements has not been scientifically substantiated or proven. Many manufacturers claim to have carried out independent research and studies to test the efficiency and effect of the pills. However, they have never been published in any medical reports or journals. The FDA doesn?t check these products for safety or efficiency because they are sold as herbal products.

Breast enhancement pills are made out of various natural ingredients, herb and plant derivatives. These are considered natural alternative methods to enhance the size of the breast. They mostly contain a non-hormonal plant estrogen called phytoestrogen. Various combinations of natural ingredients like fenugreek, don quai, saw palmetto, wild yam, and blessed thistle are used to manufacture breast enhancement pills. These pills, when taken for a period of 2-3 months, are supposed to increase the size of the breast. This is achieved by triggering the growth of the breast tissue. Breast enhancement pills stimulate breast tissue growth by producing a natural hormonal change that occurs during puberty.

Breast enhancement should be done after carefully evaluating the various ingredients and their potential side effects. A physician can be consulted in this regard. Furthermore, a good gynecologist will be able to tell women how exactly breast enhancement pills will affect her unique body and psyche. Certain ingredients in the pills may react adversely when taken in conjunction with other medication.

Breast Enhancer provides detailed information on Breast Enhancers, Breast Enhancer Resources, Silicone Breast Enhancers, Breast Enhancer Pills and more. Breast Enhancer is affiliated with Natural Breast Enlargement.

Mesothelioma Exposed!

Mesothelioma is an uncommon tumour arising from mesothelial lining of serous cavities, most often in the pleural (covering of lungs) cavity, and rarely in peritoneal (coverings of abdomen) cavity and pericardial (covering of the heart) sac. They are of two types --- benign (solitary) and malignant (diffuse). The biological behavior of the mesothelioma?s can be usually predicted by their gross appearance; thoses forming solitary, discrete masses are generally benign, whereas those, which grow diffusely, are usually malignant.

BENIGN (SOLITARY) MESOTHELIOMA

Benign or solitary mesothelioma is also called pleural fibroma. Asbestos exposure plays no role on the etiology of benign mesothelioma. Grossly it consists of of a solitary, circumscribed, small, firm mass, generally less than 3cm in diameter. Cut surface shows whorls of dense fibrous tissue. Microscopically, the tumour is predominantly composed of whorls of collagen fibres and reticulin with interspersed fibroblasts. Rarely, mesothelial-lined clefts are seen in the tumour. Benign mesothelioma causes no symptoms and is detected as an incidental radiologic finding. Sometimes the tumour is associated with systemic syndrome of osteoarthropathy or hypoglycemia. Removal of the tumour is generally curative.

MALIGNANT (DIFFUSE) MESOTHELIOMA

Malignant or diffuse mesothelioma is rare. It is a highly malignant tumour associated with high mortality. The tumour is significant in view of its recognized association with occupational exposure to asbestos for a number of years, usually 20-40 years. About 90% of malignant mesothelioma?s are asbestos ?related. Mechanism of carcinogenecity by asbestos is not quite clear but it appears that prolonged exposure of amphibole type of asbestos is capable of inducing oncogenic mutation in the mesothelium. However prolonged exposure is considered more significant rather than heavy exposure as documented by its occurrence in the family of asbestos workers. Although combination of cigarette smoking and asbestos exposure greatly increases risk to develop bronchgenic carcinoma, there is no such extra increased risk of developing mesothelioma in asbestos workers who smoke. Recently, SV40 (simian vacuolating virus) has also been implicated in the etiology of mesothelioma.

Emergency First Aid and CPR

Each year millions of people are injured. Prompt first aid can mean the difference between life and death for many individuals with serious injuries. Just as important is CPR. When someone suffers cardiac arrest, prompt CPR can mean the difference between life and death.

The National Safety Council and the Red Cross provide classes at very low cost for individuals wanting the proper training.

Some first aid steps are quite simple. Remember the ABC's.

Airway: Is there anything obstructing the person?s ability to breathe.

Bleeding/breathing: As simple as this might sound, very shallow breaths might not be obvious. Look, listen and feel for breaths. If your victim is not breathing, begin mouth to mouth resuscitation.

After checking for breathing, you need to next concern yourself with bleeding. Is there severe bleeding? If so, it's imperative that this be controlled. The best means of controlling bleeding is direct pressure.

Circulation: Is the heart beating? Again, look, listen, and feel. You will not always be able to feel a pulse at the wrist, it is best to check for the carotid (neck) pulse. When the blood pressure lowers significantly, a pulse in the wrist may not be felt.

If you take nothing else from this article, please take this to heart.

In addition to First Aid, most courses offered also include CPR, which can literally save a life. CPR can also be taught as a stand-alone course, though the American Heart Association.

"So You Want To Build A Home Gym"

I walked into the commercial gym yesterday after a long day of work excited to begin my workout. After warming up I proceeded to the squat rack to start my resistance training workout. I unfortunately ran into a bit of a roadblock. I was planning on starting with some Back Squats but there was a young man in the power rack performing barbell biceps curls with horrible form (a definite no-no!).

I decided to go to Plan B and rearrange my workout only to find that the flat benches were all occupied as well. This trend continued and everywhere I turned the equipment I desired was being used. I was happy that so many people were working out but at the same time I was frustrated that my well-laid plans were spoiled. I learned a long time ago that it is wise to have a back-up plan in place for situations like this so I decided to head home and revert to Plan C, which was my home workout routine.

I have found that having the option to workout at home is essential for people with busy schedules, for others who do not like going to crowded gyms, or for people who need a contingency plan for just-in-case situations (that?s me!). Another reason to have a home gym is that warmer weather has finally arrived and you may be less likely to go to your commercial gym.

I have helped people design expensive, well-equipped home gyms and I have helped others design very cost-effective, space-saving workouts areas. My personal home gym consists of a Stability Ball, 5lb to 95lb Dumbbells, some Kettlebells, an adjustable Weighted Vest, Adjustable DB Handles, Elastic Bands, 2kg to 10kg Medicine Balls, Ankle Weights, an AB Roller, a variety of Exercise Videos, and a minimal amount of space!

Anyone can have a Home Gym and there are many reasons to have one. The following list of questions should help you design a Home Gym that will suit your needs, your space, and your budget!

Questions To Ask When Building Your Home Gym:

The First Step: Ask Yourself Why?

Why do you want a home gym? What will it give you that you do not already have? What is your empowering vision of your ideal physique or athletic accomplishment? What are your short and long term goals? Always begin with a vision of the end results in mind, as this will guide you in your efforts. If you have not developed a vision of what you want to accomplish at this point, then that is the first thing you need to do. Develop a plan of attack for building your body and building your home gym.

Without a plan you might end up disappointed with the lack of results and frustrated that you bought the wrong equipment. Ask yourself what kind of results you expect your home gym to deliver? Is your home gym going to supplement your commercial gym membership (as a contingency plan)? Will you be doing your cardiovascular exercise outside or inside on a machine? Will you be doing stretching, strength training, or both? Is your home gym going to be the only place that you work out? Think about these things when designing your home gym.

I. How much are you willing to spend ($$$$$$$)?

How much do you want to spend, plain and simple? If you are just starting out with an exercise program, you might consider starting small with a simple, yet very effective, pair of Dumbbells. You can perform a full-body workout with a pair of dumbbells, some bodyweight exercises, and with a little knowledgeable of proper exercise technique. If you want to do it inexpensively, hire a knowledgeable fitness professional to design an individualized exercise program that you can do with a pair of Dumbbells in the comfort of your home. I have listed a variety of items that you might consider adding to your home gym.

Equipment Considerations:

A. Cardiovascular Machine

If you insist on performing your cardiovascular exercise routine at home be prepared to spend some money! Be aware, a gym quality treadmill, stationary bike, rowing ergometer, or elliptical trainer is going to cost you. You can buy used or refurbished gym quality equipment for a discounted price and if I wanted a cardio machine for my home this is probably the route that I would take. If you are thinking, ?I?ll just save a few hundred dollars and buy an inexpensive treadmill at the mall,? make sure you do some research and ensure that you will buy something that is going to last and that will fit y our needs. I know many people who have purchased flimsy treadmills and regretted it soon thereafter. There are quality treadmills out there you just have to know where to look. I would recommend talking to my friend Bob McKinnon at McKinnon Technical Services (603-644-7539) who knows gym equipment like the back of his hand. He can point you in the right direction if you want to!

B. A Multi-Purpose Home Gym Machine

There are numerous multi-purpose gyms on the market and some are better than others. Chances are, if you turn on your television late at night and flip through the channels, you will be exposed to clever marketing using beautifully sculpted fitness models promising results in six weeks or less if you purchase their machine! Guess what. You can get results without a two thousand dollar machine that will most likely be collecting dust in a year anyway! Why not begin your quest for improved fitness with a modest investment in a pair of Dumbbells? Why not purchase a $20 book on how to get into shape? How about meeting with someone who specializes in coaching people through the process of positive physical change such as fitness professional or Registered Dietician? Infomercials are notorious for clever marketing and they can be very compelling. Avoid impulsive buying and do some research first before purchasing an expensive multi-gym. I recommend consulting a qualified fitness professional about the usefulness of such a machine, interviewing people who have that machine, and possibly even test-driving one before you make this decision. I have to mention that every Spring and Fall I see countless multi-gyms sitting out on someone?s lawn as part of the annual yard sale. I wonder why that is?

C. Barbells

If I had the room in my apartment, I would go out and buy a Barbell today! With a 45 lb. Olympic Barbell you can perform a wide variety of exercises in a variety of different ways. If you are an athlete, you have the space available, and you want to improve your sports performance, learning how to correctly perform the Olympic Weightlifting movements (Clean and Jerk, Snatch, and all the variations) can take your performance to the next level! To name a few, exercises such as Squats, Overhead Squats, Deadlifts, Bent over Rows, Bench Presses, Overhead Presses, and Upright Rows can be performed. I would recommend having an adjustable Power Rack and adjustable bench to augment the versatility of the barbell. Space and total cost are big factors when considering purchasing a barbell.

D. Dumbbells

If you want to save money and space, dumbbells are the way to go. You might consider two to three sets of dumbbells (they can be purchased at a sporting goods store for any where between $.35-$.75/pound (In Concord, NH, Check out Olympia Sports in the Mall, Sears, Target, Walmart, Northeast Fitness, or check out the newspapers for the least expensive way to go!). I prefer the metal dumbbells but there are also rubber coated and adjustable dumbbells available. ?Power Blocks,? (perform a search on the internet to learn more about these) are adjustable dumbbells and are a great tool that take up a lot less space in your home gym, offers great versatility, and offers adjustable resistance to suit your needs. There are also other forms of adjustable dumbbells that consist of two handles, collars, and series of different size weight plates.

When selecting weights, it wise to start light and gradually purchase heavier dumbbells as you need them. I am able to perform wide variety of exercises with Dumbbells. If your goal is fat-loss, then a properly designed resistance training program that incorporates multi-joint Dumbbell exercises will help you achieve your goals more efficiently than many gym machines that ?isolate? certain muscle groups. Remember, the more muscle groups that you incorporate, the more energy your body burns, and the better your results will be! Exercise technique is a factor but I?ll happily let you know that I have taught 90-year-old women and 11-year-old boys how to perform the most ?difficult? Dumbbell exercises with pristine form.

E. Medicine Balls

Medicine Balls are a great tool depending upon your fitness goals and your current training level. For an athlete in search of sports performance enhancement, Medicine Balls are a great tool because they can be accelerated in a rapid fashion through many planes of motion. If general fitness is your goal, you can perform many traditional gym exercises with a Medicine Ball as well. Medicine balls come in all shapes, sizes, weights, and colors. Be sure that the ball you pick suits your needs. By the way, these are also great for outdoor workouts on a sunny day!

F. Benches and Stability Balls:

A bench can be a great tool that will allow you to perform more exercises during your home workout sessions. Some benches are adjustable and offer great versatility while others are just fixed benches. Space is a concern for many people and that makes the Stability Ball (a.k.a. Swiss Ball) a great alternative to a bench. With a Stability Ball you can perform inclined, seated, prone, supine, floor, and a number of lower body exercises. A knowledgeable fitness professional could teach you how to perform a full-body workout with a Stability Ball and a pair of dumbbells. There are a number of different ways to use it in order to maximize your home workout routines. Not only can it replace a more expensive exercise machine or bench, but it can also double as a chair, take up less space, and challenge your body?s balance in ways that a stable bench/machine cannot.

G. Resistance Bands/Tubes:

The cable pulley system at your local gym offers a number of exercises that can increase the variety of your workouts tremendously. An alternative to the cable pulley system for your home gym could be resistance bands or tubing that you can tie to a pillar in the basement of fix in a closed door. You can buy tubing that comes with handles already attached in some fitness catalogs or you could just tie a loop in one end to make your own makeshift handle. It is important to mention that elastic resistance training has many benefits and many inherent flaws. If you understand how to properly combine elastic resistance training with inertial (free weight training) you can maximize your results! A knowledgeable exercise professional can help you design your home gym to take advantage of these tools.

H. Exercise Videos:

There are many great exercise videos out there (and a lot more bad ones!). There are videos for Yoga, Step Aerobics, Tae-Bo, Pilates, Strength Training, Stability Ball Training, and every other imaginable fitness topic out there. Check out your local sporting goods store or Borders for a selection of exercise videos. The key is to find a couple videos that you enjoy and that give you the workout that you are looking for.

I. Other Fun Tools:

If you walk into a sporting goods store or open a fitness equipment catalog you will see a variety of toys that can supposedly enhance your workouts and deliver unbelievable results. Buyer beware! No one piece of equipment can solve all of your home gym needs and you must consider how this piece of equipment will fit into your complete program. Watch out for gimmicks and miracle exercise machines. Ask a fitness professional their opinion before you buy and you may save yourself some money! Do a little research before purchasing equipment for your home or you may run the risk of buying an expensive coat rack!

II. How much square footage do you have?

Simply put, how much space do you have available? Do you have enough room for an adjustable bench or a mutli-purpose exercise machine? Is the area well ventilated? How much ceiling height do you have? Are your floors solid? Do you have neighbors that might not appreciate you jumping up and down? Will you have room for all of the equipment you want to get? Thinking about these issues in advance will save you a lot of hassle in the long run. Finally, determine what else your home gym is used for? Will your home gym also be used for family gatherings, a playroom for the kids, an office, a gathering area to watch the Final Four, or strictly as a home gym? These are some other aspects to consider when designing your home gym.

III. Do you know your way around the gym?

Are you a beginner, an intermediate, an expert, or an advanced exerciser? A beginner might start out with an exercise tape, a Stability ball, and a couple of 5 pound dumbbells where as a more advanced exerciser might have a Barbell, Olympic Bench, a Stability Ball, an Adjustable Step, a Selectorized Weight Machine, a Power Rack, and a variety of Dumbbells. Have you been properly trained in the use of Free Weights or do you feel more comfortable using a machine? What kind of equipment does your plan of attack call for? The answers to these questions will help you better choose a home gym that works for you.

In closing, be sure to spend considerable time looking into the process of designing and constructing your home gym as it can be a very important addition to your life and to your home. Consider consulting an exercise professional to make sure that your gym will suit your individual needs, your budget, and your home. There are many reasons to have a home gym and it can be designed to help you achieve the results that you are looking for!

Buying A Treadmill? 3 Reasons Not To

Considering the purchase of a treadmill? If you are thinking about getting the benefits of a little running with the use of a treadmill, think again. There are several reasons why you should not use them. The fact is that you have several other opportunities out there for you. If you plan to exercise, you can purchase whatever exercise equipment you need to do so. But, don?t waste your money. Here are some facts that you should consider.

Why Not To Buy It

1. The pain- If you have used a treadmill in the past, you are probably well aware of the pain they can cause. The surface you are running on is hard and the impact can do some real damage to your body. Not only are you likely to feel it in shin splints but you?ll feel it in your knees as well as in your lower back. The fact is that you are doing well for your body but you are also doing bad for your body. Trading weight loss or muscle gain for back aches and sprained knees in return may not be the best way to go.

2. Outdoors is better- If you are the running type and can?t live without it then do it outside. Not only is the clean air good for you physically, but the fact is that the changes in the incline is better running than any treadmill can provide. When you run around your neighborhood, you?re more likely to have varying slopes, and the running path is likely to change course. This helps to push your heart just that much more. This is especially true when you use a different route each time you head out. You?ll get a better workout and best of all - it?s free!

3. Choose an Elliptical- Okay, so you know why you shouldn?t go with a treadmill but what do you use for indoor training then? If you are going to run, use an elliptical. Sure, it?s not the same as running outdoors but it offers a much healthier way of exercising because of its lower impact on your body.

Leave the treadmill at the store. Get out, or buy an elliptical instead and reap the rewards.
